As Brittney Griner‘s time in Russian custody continues to take place, it looks like U.S. officials have now determined she was wrongfully detained in Russia back in March.

According to the Associated Press, the Biden administration has announced that Brittney was wrongfully detained, which means the U.S. will now move more vigorously when it comes to getting her released from Russian authorities. As previously reported, she was detained after vape cartridges containing hashish oil were found in her luggage.

Brittney’s agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, said,

“Brittney has been detained for 75 days and our expectation is that the White House do whatever is necessary to bring her home.”

With the start of the WNBA season only days away, they have announced they will honor Brittney with a floor decal that will feature her initials, as well as her number, 42. The WNBA will also allow the Phoenix Mercury to continue to pay her this season without it being counted against the team’s cap.

Nneka Ogwumike, the president of the WNBA’s players’ union spoke out and said,

“It has been 75 days that our friend, teammate, sister, Brittney Griner, has been wrongfully detained in Russia. It is time for her to come home. Having learned that the U.S. government has now determined that BG is being wrongfully detained we are hopeful that their efforts will be significant, swift, and successful.”

As previously reported, last week, Brittney began to trend on Twitter after it was announced that Marine veteran Trevor Reed was released from Russia after the U.S. orchestrated an exchange, which allowed him to be released after almost three years.

With his return home, many of Brittney’s supporters were urging that her case be treated in the same manner. Previous reports have stated Brittney will remain detained in Russia until at least May 19th.
